On May 10, 2011 the Fourteenth Annual Police Unity Tour will begin. In May 1997, the Police Unity Tour® was organized by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park (NJ) Police Department. The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum.

Each year hundreds of sworn law enforcement officers (active and retired) and immediate family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty (survivors) participate as RIDERS in this event. The Police Unity Tour is a 3-day, 250-mile ride to Washington D.C., where other Chapters join together. The unified group of over 1,200 law enforcement officers and survivors complete their 250-mile journey, riding the final 2 miles to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Our organization raises money through family and friends, bake sales, and a variety of other forms of donations. Each RIDER must raise a minimum of $1800 to participate in the ride. RIDERS must have a bike and the proper equipment for the long ride. It is up to the RIDER to arrange for transportation to the departure site and return from Washington, DC.

Our motto, “WE RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED” truly demonstrates the spirit of this event. It wasn’t until losing a co-worker of own, Hollywood Police Officer Alex Del Rio (EOW 11/22/08) that we (Hollywood Police Department) learned of the Police Unity Tour. Last year (2010 Police Unity Tour) we represented the City of Hollywood with six Hollywood Riders. We rode in Memory of a Fallen Officer as well as our six Hollywood Fallen Officers, who had never been ridden for. They finally made the trip with us in 2010!

ALBANY New York — Three New York State Police officers who helped end shooting spree in East Greenbush in January 2009 were honored Wednesday by Gov. David Paterson.

The three officers worked together to end a dramatic shootout that began after Trooper Henry stopped a speeding cab carrying Darrel O. Brown, 23, of Hartford, Conn. Brown began shooting using a high-powered .223-caliber rifle. Off-duty, Investigator Livolsi was a few cars away from the traffic stop on I-90. He picked up the cab driver and Henry, and backed them out of range; Brown fired 28 times during a 43-minute confrontation.

Trooper Borbee, a marksman, arrived and got within 75 yards of the shooter — well within the 145-yard range of Brown’s rifle — and stopped Brown with one shot. Brown later died at the hospital.

While my family and I were in Berne, Indiana for Swiss days this Summer my son and I got some pictures of their police cars and their police department. Everything in Berne, Indiana has a Swiss motif. This is definitely the nicest looking police department I have seen.

Unfortunately these stories keep coming into existence.

On 8-29-10, Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was doing administrative paperwork on Sunday between church services when a man came into the Visalia church and asked for a leader of the church. After being directed to Sannar, the attacker shot and killed him. After the shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the attacker. Police then responded and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged. The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. No police personnel were injured. The suspect did not seem to know Sannar, and he was not a member of the church, and no one at the church recognized him.

It is not known yet whether or not that particular Mormon Church had a Church Security Ministry Team in place, or some other security awareness training. My heart goes out to the entire congregation and to the family of Clay Sannar.

We should learn from this tragedy so that this sort of act of violence will not happen again. Unfortunately, I think it will only continue due to the fact that we live in a fallen world that is in a state of permanent moral decay. We all think it will not happen to us, but we couldn’t be more wrong. We must protect our flock. I urge all church members of all faiths to ask their church administrators what security plans they have in place should the wolf come knocking on their door for a visit. If your church has a security ministry team, great, keep it tuned up. If it does not, implore your church administrators to seek out security consultants and implement a security team. Learn what options are available. There is a security plan that can be tailored to any church setting or function.
