On May 10, 2011 the Fourteenth Annual Police Unity Tour will begin. In May 1997, the Police Unity Tour® was organized by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park (NJ) Police Department. The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum.

Each year hundreds of sworn law enforcement officers (active and retired) and immediate family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty (survivors) participate as RIDERS in this event. The Police Unity Tour is a 3-day, 250-mile ride to Washington D.C., where other Chapters join together. The unified group of over 1,200 law enforcement officers and survivors complete their 250-mile journey, riding the final 2 miles to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Our organization raises money through family and friends, bake sales, and a variety of other forms of donations. Each RIDER must raise a minimum of $1800 to participate in the ride. RIDERS must have a bike and the proper equipment for the long ride. It is up to the RIDER to arrange for transportation to the departure site and return from Washington, DC.

Our motto, “WE RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED” truly demonstrates the spirit of this event. It wasn’t until losing a co-worker of own, Hollywood Police Officer Alex Del Rio (EOW 11/22/08) that we (Hollywood Police Department) learned of the Police Unity Tour. Last year (2010 Police Unity Tour) we represented the City of Hollywood with six Hollywood Riders. We rode in Memory of a Fallen Officer as well as our six Hollywood Fallen Officers, who had never been ridden for. They finally made the trip with us in 2010!

I have made a commitment to this organization, and we cannot continue the tradition of success without help from you. I have set a personal goal to raise $2,000 by November 30, 2010, and I sincerely appreciate any donation you are able to offer, please remember that any amount helps! www.firstgiving.com/stetkar

ALBANY New York — Three New York State Police officers who helped end shooting spree in East Greenbush in January 2009 were honored Wednesday by Gov. David Paterson.

The three officers worked together to end a dramatic shootout that began after Trooper Henry stopped a speeding cab carrying Darrel O. Brown, 23, of Hartford, Conn. Brown began shooting using a high-powered .223-caliber rifle. Off-duty, Investigator Livolsi was a few cars away from the traffic stop on I-90. He picked up the cab driver and Henry, and backed them out of range; Brown fired 28 times during a 43-minute confrontation.

Trooper Borbee, a marksman, arrived and got within 75 yards of the shooter — well within the 145-yard range of Brown’s rifle — and stopped Brown with one shot. Brown later died at the hospital.

While my family and I were in Berne, Indiana for Swiss days this Summer my son and I got some pictures of their police cars and their police department. Everything in Berne, Indiana has a Swiss motif. This is definitely the nicest looking police department I have seen.
